Football festival in full swing – enthusiastic German-Danish atmosphere

08.07.2025

On the day of the second group game in St. Jakob-Park, the match between Germany and Denmark, the fan zones on Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz filled up early. A particularly large number of football fans from the neighbouring country made their way to Basel. But the colours of the Danish team were also very much in evidence. A total of around 3500 fans made their way to the stadium on foot.

The match kicked off at 6 p.m., but thousands of German fans had already been building up the atmosphere at Messeplatz for hours. A fan bus marked the presence of the large contingent of supporters from the neighbouring country, and a DJ who had travelled with them provided entertainment. The Danish fans gathered at Barfüsserplatz. And although they were significantly fewer in number, they were every bit as loud as their German counterparts.

Fan march with 3,500 participants

At 3 p.m., both groups of fans set off from Münsterplatz and Messeplatz respectively and began the three-kilometre fan march to the stadium. A total of around 3,500 people took part in the fan march, significantly exceeding the turnout for the opening match. The fan march was accompanied by the Basel-Stadt cantonal police and colleagues from the neighbouring German cantons as part of trilateral cooperation. The fan march was peaceful and passed off without incident.

Large crowds at the ball park and trophy exhibition

The fan zones recorded high visitor numbers today. Since opening on 1 July, visitor numbers have been increasing almost daily. Today, a record number of around 10,000 people was reached. The ball park on the Messeplatz, with over 2,000 registered participants, and the trophy exhibition ‘Pokale zum Träumen’ (Trophies to Dream About) in the Historical Museum near the Barfüsserplatz fan zone, which has already attracted around 1,500 visitors, have been particularly popular so far.

All matches live in the fan zones

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the fan zones will reopen their doors at 3 p.m. In addition to the cultural and sporting programme, visitors can look forward to live broadcasts of the matches between England and the Netherlands and France and Wales. The complete programme with all fan experiences can be found here.
